EL GRECO exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan
From October 11, 2023 to February 11, 2024, Palazzo Reale in Milan will present a major exhibition on Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco (1541-1614). The exhibition, organized by the Comune di Milano Cultura with the support of Palazzo Reale and MondoMostre and under the patronage of the Embassy of Spain in Italy, features over 40 of his masterpieces, complemented by important international loans.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of El Greco’s work, especially his relationship with Italian models and his late Toledo period, when he turned again to Byzantine art. Using comparisons with well-known Roman and Venetian paintings, El Greco’s journey through the cultural capitals of the Mediterranean is traced.
Five thematic sections highlight various aspects of his life and work:
- A crossroads: focuses on his beginnings in Crete and his further education in Venice and Rome.
- Dialogues with Italy: shows works created under the influence of Italian masters such as Titian and Michelangelo.
- Painting of holiness: highlighting the works of religious content from his time in Toledo.
- Once again the icon: El Greco returns to Byzantine compositional techniques.
- Laocoon: a look at his unique mythological work.
Outstanding works such as “Saint Martin and the Beggar” and “Laocoon” from the National Gallery in Washington as well as other works from major museums and church collections enrich the exhibition.
An accompanying catalog contains essays by renowned experts that provide deep insight into the life and art of El Greco.
Short biography – El Greco
Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco, was born in Crete in 1541 and died in Toledo in 1614. After leaving Crete in 1567, he went to Venice and later to Rome to continue his training as a painter. Despite a lack of support in Italy, he tried to succeed in Spain. In Toledo, where he arrived in 1577, he found a loyal following despite initial difficulties and produced some of his most famous works. In this city he developed a unique artistic language, and at his death in 1614 he left an impressive legacy that is still admired today.
