Saturday, September 30, 2023: Rievocazione Storica

As a foretaste of the donkey race, the Palio degli Asini, the neighborhoods will compete in historical costumes on Saturday evening at the Rievocazione Storica. This traditional historical re-enactment in costume takes place in the Arena of the Palio in Piazza Risorgimento. It is a true theatrical performance staged by over 400 performers who take turns in groups to present historical and legendary episodes that marked the life of the medieval population.

The jury of experts evaluates the costumes, the historical period in which the representation takes place, as well as the involvement of the residents of the districts. This is an emotional experience that visitors will remember for a long time.

Sunday, October 1, 2023: Palio degli Asini

On the first Sunday of October, around the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in the historic center of Alba, takes place the Palio degli Asini, a crazy donkey race in which the nine districts of the city compete for the banner.

In preparation for the Donkey Race, the districts will compete in another Rievocazione Storica on Saturday evening, dressed in period costumes. This is also a theatrical performance staged by over 400 performers.

On the Sunday before the race, the donkeys will be assigned to the districts. This act is already a foretaste of the actual race and is based on ancient traditions and unique rivalries.

And then comes the actual Palio. It is a cheerful day organized in total respect for the animals and in an arena full of colors, costumes, gaiety and fans. There are two heats and the final. The winner wins the banner, usually designed by a renowned artist, which undoubtedly captures the history of the Palio and the districts on the few centimeters of canvas.

Before the race, at 14:00, there will be a parade through the streets of the city, starting from Piazza Michele Ferrero, then along Corso Fratelli Bandiera, Corso Matteotti to Campo Palio.

Saturday, 14 and Sunday, October 15, 2023: Baccanale dei Borghi

During the Baccanale dei Borghi, participants will be welcomed in period costumes in the historic center of the city among ancient inspirations, good wine and good food. Two days full of historical reenactments, accompanied and celebrated by the neighborhoods that have marked the history of Alba.

Through the activities of the residents of the districts, you can experience firsthand what life might have been like in medieval Alba and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of antiquity.
