Date and place of the Klosn in Stilfs
The unique custom event “Klosn in Stilfs” takes place every year on the Saturday before St. Nicholas Day (December 6). This date is of great importance in the Christian calendar.
The event will take place in the picturesque village of Stilfs (Stilfserjoch) in the Vinschgau Valley in South Tyrol, Italy. The village is known for its well-preserved culture and tradition and provides the ideal setting for this unique festival.
Young men take on the roles of barkers, donkeys and tuifels. They wear fearsome masks and wild robes made of colorful fabrics and animal skins, accompanied by the deafening sound of heavy bells that they wear around their bodies. At the same time, St. Nicholas walks calmly and unperturbed through the streets, accompanied by the four “whites” in white robes: the “light bearer”, the “rod bearer”, the “catechism bearer” and the “box bearer”. In the evening the congregation gathers in front of the church gate for the “Avemarialäuten”. Then begins the exuberant Klosnfest with music, food and drink, which lasts until late at night.
