Sunday, October 1, 2023: Palio degli Asini

On the first Sunday of October, around the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in the historic center of Alba, takes place the Palio degli Asini, a crazy donkey race in which the nine districts of the city compete for the banner.

In preparation for the Donkey Race, the districts will compete in another Rievocazione Storica on Saturday evening, dressed in period costumes. This is also a theatrical performance staged by over 400 performers.

On the Sunday before the race, the donkeys will be assigned to the districts. This act is already a foretaste of the actual race and is based on ancient traditions and unique rivalries.

And then comes the actual Palio. It is a cheerful day organized in total respect for the animals and in an arena full of colors, costumes, gaiety and fans. There are two heats and the final. Before the race, at 14:00, there will be a parade through the streets of the city, starting from Piazza Michele Ferrero, then along Corso Fratelli Bandiera, Corso Matteotti to Campo Palio.

During the Baccanale dei Borghi, participants will be welcomed in period costumes in the historic center of the city among ancient inspirations, good wine and good food. Two days full of historical reenactments, accompanied and celebrated by the neighborhoods that have marked the history of Alba.

Wer dies nicht tut, wird von den Orangenwürfen der Fußtruppen und Wagenbesatzungen getroffen.

    Die Schlacht basiert auf ungeschriebenen ritterlichen Regeln, die von allen Teilnehmern geteilt werden. Diese Regeln gewährleisten die allgemeine Sicherheit (abgesehen von einigen blauen Augen) und halten den Wettbewerb auf dem Niveau eines echten sportlichen Wettkampfs. Am Ende gewinnt derjenige, der am besten wirft und die Orangen mit der größten Intensität trifft. Der Kampf zwischen Fußtruppen und Wagenbesatzungen nimmt oft den Charakter eines individuellen Duells an. Eine herzliche Umarmung und kollektiver Applaus beider Seiten besiegeln die wiedergefundene Freundschaft.

  3. Die Wertung: Es gibt ein bedeutendes Wertungssystem für die Schlacht, das zur Ermittlung des Siegerteams dient. Die Schiedsrichter, die gleichmäßig auf die verschiedenen Wagen aufgeteilt sind, bewerten die Teams nach folgenden Kriterien: 40% für den Kampfgeist des Teams, 30% für Fair Play und 30% für die beste Präsentation.
  4. Ein bisschen Geschichte: Ursprünglich wurden im Mittelalter Bohnen in der Schlacht verwendet. Es wird erzählt, dass der Feudalherr den ärmeren Familien zweimal im Jahr einen Topf Bohnen schenkte und diese, aus Verachtung, die Bohnen auf die Straßen warfen. Während des Karnevals wurden die gleichen Bohnen als scherzhafte Geschosse verwendet, um sie auf improvisierte Gegner zu werfen.Die Ursprünge der heutigen Schlacht liegen jedoch im 19. Jahrhundert, als junge Mädchen aus der Stadt die Gewohnheit entwickelten, von ihren Balkonen aus Orangen auf die Straße zu werfen, zusammen mit Konfetti, Blumen und anderen Dingen, um die Aufmerksamkeit junger Männer zu erregen. Kutschen antworteten scherzhaft, und nach und nach entwickelte sich die Geste des Geschenks zu einem Duell. Erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, mit der Gründung der ersten Fußtruppenmannschaft (Asso di Picche), erhielt die Schlacht “Battaglia delle Arance”die heutigen klaren Regeln, die von den ritterlichen Codes inspiriert sind. Die erste Schlacht fand im Jahr 1947 statt.

Der Countdown: Diesmal muss man dabei sein

Der Karneval von Ivrea ist für die Einwohner von Ivrea mehr als nur ein Moment der Flucht. Es ist eine Leidenschaft und eine alte Tradition, in der sie ihre Wurzeln wiederfinden und die gesamte Bürgerschaft in ein großes kollektives Ritual aus Teilen, Wettbewerb, Loyalität und Werten wie Freiheit (vor der Tyrannei) und Fruchtbarkeit (mit dem Verbrennen der “Scarli”) hineinziehen. Der Karneval ist im Grunde genommen eine Leidenschaft, die die Einwohner von Ivrea das ganze Jahr über erleben, wobei sich jeder einen Platz und eine Rolle in dieser großen kollektiven Inszenierung sucht.

Die Veranstaltung wird so leidenschaftlich wahrgenommen, dass sobald eine Ausgabe vorbei ist, der Countdown für die nächste beginnt. Diesmal muss man dabei sein.
